Broken Promise

Natalie Burns

Sticky, black fear spills from my gut,
All roads are closed, all escape routes shut.
Sadness gnaws at my inside,
An empty core,
No place for the child to hide
Naked and frightened
She weeps inside the hollow shell,
"You promised you would never tell,
You promised you would never tell,
You promised you would never tell.”
